Amcor Flexibles Food - Innovative and Responsible Packaging

Amcor Flexibles is one of the world's largest suppliers of flexible packaging. We deliver innovative, responsible and effective packaging solutions for the beverage, fresh food and processed food markets. Our innovative packaging adds value to coffee, confectionery, snack foods, ready meals, bakery, yoghurt, fresh produce and chilled foods such as cheese and meat, and to many other food and beverage market segments.

Flexible food packaging

Amcor Flexibles Food is a pan-European business that has 21 plants in 13 countries and serves all the major food segments.

Compostable, recyclable packaging products

Amcor's NaturePlus range of biodegradable, compostable and recyclable packaging products responds to global demands for more sustainable packaging solutions. In fact, Amcor Flexibles has received numerous awards for its activities in bioplastics and Amcor NaturePlus has been used for fresh produce for some years.

In order to create further opportunities in other relevant market segments Amcor Flexibles is currently developing enhanced renewable and compostable packaging solutions for applications that make high demands on barrier structures.

Recyclable fresh produce bags

As a result of cooperation with Amcor Flexibles, UK retailer Sainsbury's was able to convert its fresh produce bags from the currently non-recyclable polypropylene to recyclable polyethylene. The new polyethylene packs can be returned to Sainsbury's stores where they will be collected for recycling.

Amcor's packaging solutions also lead to packaging weight reduction. By using Amcor PushPop Sainsbury's was able to reduce the packaging weight for its blueberries by 75% by replacing trays and punnets. This specific packaging concept allows consumers to do their bit for the environment; incorporated holes at the bottom of the pack allow them to wash the fruits directly in the pack. There is no need to use plates or bowls, which need to be cleaned after usage, and rigid plastic use is reduced.

Reclosable food packaging

Portuguese retailer Pingo Doce and its packer ELS have recently introduced Amcor TapeTop® for their fresh cut herbs. Amcor TapeTop (patent pending) is an incorporated reclosing mechanism on a standard pack, which allows multiple reclosing and therefore helps to reduce food waste. To keep their herbs fresh after opening the pack consumers simply detach the strip, roll the film down and tape over the top. There is no need to repack the herbs into rigid plastic containers.

Amcor ReClose, a packaging format often used for sliced meat or cheese, answers consumer demands for packaging that ensures product freshness, is easy to open and close, and offers a high standard of hygiene. Through its reclosability Amcor ReClose not only adds to consumer convenience but also helps to reduce food waste.

Global environmental programme

Sustainability is a vital aspect of Amcor's business. EnviroAction is Amcor's global environmental programme, designed to address Amcor's operational impacts relevant to climate change and resource issues. Amcor's EnviroAction targets include reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, reduction of waste to landfill and water targets.

Amcor's priorities for marketplace sustainability continue to focus on two specific areas: developing a deep understanding of customers' needs and the markets in which Amcor operates, and becoming the preferred source for more sustainable packaging solutions.

During 2008/09 the focus on partnering with customers to achieve more sustainable packaging results saw increased use of software calculators to determine the environmental impact of packaging products. To provide the most efficient and sustainable packaging solution to its clients Amcor Flexibles has developed the Amcor CalculatO2r, a tool that can compare the carbon footprint of different packaging solutions by assessing the relative impacts of processes, materials and transport.

This tool has proven effective in giving customers an overview of emissions produced by their current packaging specifications and providing them with lower carbon footprint alternatives. The Amcor CalculatO2r is also used by Amcor's Innovation teams to assist in designing products with lower carbon footprints.
