Stavros Dimas

Stavros Dimas has been the European Commissioner for the Environment since 2004. He studied law and economics in Greece and the US, and has worked as a lawyer for the World Bank and Sullivan & Cromwell, a Wall Street law firm.

He held the post of deputy governor of the Hellenic Industrial Development Bank between 1975 and 1977, before entering politics. He has been elected to the Greek parliament ten consecutive times since 1977 and has held leading posts in Greek politics.

In March 2004, he was appointed European Commissioner for Employment and Social Affairs before becoming Commissioner for the Environment
