NATUREFLEX(TM) BARKS UP THE RIGHT TREE FOR DOG BISCUIT PRODUCER

Innovia Films' biodegradable and compostable flexible material, NatureFlex(TM) has been chosen as part of the packaging for a new range of all natural, organic dog biscuits produced in the USA.

Based in Stockton Springs, Maine, Barkwheats(TM) Dog Biscuits was founded in November 2007 by Chris Roberts. He decided to make not only tasty hand crafted organic treats for dogs, but ones which used locally sourced ingredients, offered a solution to the waste stream created by purchasing those treats and was also suitable for humans to consume.

NatureFlex(TM) was an obvious choice for the packaging as the film begins life as a natural product - wood and breaks down in a home compost bin (or industrial compost environment) within a matter of weeks - yet also offers advantages for packing and converting such as inherent deadfold and anti-static properties, high gloss and transparency, resistance to grease and oil, good barrier to gases and aromas and a wide heat-seal range. In this application, NatureFlex(TM) NE film is converted into liner bags by Pak Sel of Portland, Oregon.

Outlining why Barkwheats selected NatureFlex(TM), Chris said: “The major reason I chose products offered by Innovia Films is the compostability aspect. I needed a bag to package my dog biscuits that offered great heat sealing capabilities, was inexpensive, and compostable. Not an easy thing to accomplish, but Innovia did that all! The fact that NatureFlex(TM) carries a compostability certification is an enormous advantage. Our company was founded on principles of sustainability and environmental stewardship. Innovia has helped us attain all of our goals and keep it within a price point that is easily accessible to any business, large or small.”

Barkwheats(TM) Dog Biscuits are available in two tasty flavours - Sea Veg and Chamomile and Ginger and Parsley. Up to 97% of the ingredients are Maine sourced human grade organic - buckwheat, parsley, sea veg, eggs and honey. The company is also allergy aware as its products are grain-free and contain no soy, corn or gluten.

All NatureFlex(TM) films are cellulose based, derived from renewable wood pulp and are certified to meet both the European EN13432 and American ASTM D6400 standards for compostable packaging. The wood-pulp is sourced from managed plantations from referenced suppliers operating Good Forestry principals (FSC or equivalent). NatureFlex(TM) films typically have a renewable biobased content of some 95% by weight of material.

Thermo Fisher Scientific Unveils New APEX Metal Detectors and Systems

Thermo Fisher Scientific, the world leader in serving science, today announced the new Thermo Scientific APEX 300 metal detectors, offering high sensitivity in a small, easy to install package. These new APEX models are also available in complete drop through (D) and pipeline (P) systems, making integration into a production line easy and fast. Specifically designed for food and beverage applications, the APEX 300 is ideal for bulk flow and piped products. Due to its small size, the APEX 300 is also offered in combination with the Thermo Scientific VersaWeigh checkweigher, creating a state-of-the-art integrated weighing and contaminant detection system.

The new metal detectors build on the trusted APEX(TM) family of products, currently installed in more than 1,500 systems around the world. The APEX 300 specifically addresses a new class of applications by handling fast-moving gravity fed or piped products without sacrificing sensitivity. Designed with new signal processing algorithms, the APEX 300 is optimized for high-speed scanning and detection of contaminants. The unique multi-coil design (patent-pending) of the APEX 300 delivers the highest level of sensitivity possible in a compact, lightweight design.

“This is a significant expansion of the APEX line - we've integrated the accuracy and reliability of our metal detectors for conveyors into many different models designed for the challenging drop-through and pipeline applications,” said Bob Ries, product manager for Thermo Fisher Scientific. “With this step, we're offering our customers new ways to apply leading APEX technology to ensure food safety and protect their brands.”

All APEX 300 metal detectors have a hygienic design, which allows for easy wash down and cleaning. In bulk flow and pipeline applications this eliminates the chance of cross-contamination during product changeover. The detector's rugged touch screen has no removable parts, which translates to lower maintenance and, ultimately, a lower total cost of ownership.

Givaudan, a global fragrance and flavorings producer that served as a beta tester, installed an APEX 300 drop-through application in December 2007. "The APEX 300 is the most reliable metal detector in our operation," said Tim Pignato, maintenance supervisor at Givaudan's Itasca, IL facility.

Key benefits of the Thermo Scientific APEX 300 include:

Compact design: enables simple installation and easy maintenance without sacrificing performance

Maximum sensitivity: results in fewer false rejects because of Thermo Fisher Scientific's patent pending, multi-coil design and new application-specific software

Increased flexibility: with a wide variety of sizes and types, the APEX 300 can be used in drop-through and pipeline applications as well checkweigher combination systems

Patented AuditCheck: enables continuous monitoring of metal detector sensitivity performance, eliminating the need for manual metal detector audits

Available in complete systems (D and P): minimizes time and cost to install a metal detector by including all product handling and rejection functions

NatureFlex Part of Packaging First Down Under

Innovia Films' biodegradable, compostable and flexible packaging material, NatureFlex™ is an integral part of a packaging first for an Australian gingerbread biscuit producer.

Based in the Blue Mountains in New South Wales, Gingerbread Folk is the brainchild of former architect, turned biscuit-maker, Karen Sharman and her husband, Dominic Mason. Two years ago they decided to make their gingerbread business as sustainable as possible from the sourcing of the ingredients through to the packaging.

The NatureFlex™ pack used for the Gingerbread Folk range of biscuits is the first of its kind in Australia to be certified compostable and carries the 'seedling' logo to confirm this. To be certified the material must undergo a stringent test regime, carried out by independent accredited laboratories only, in order to confirm that their inclusion will have no negative effect on soil or compost quality.

NatureFlex™ was an obvious solution for the packaging as the film begins life as a natural product - wood and breaks down in a home compost bin (or industrial compost environment) within a matter of weeks - yet also offers advantages for packing and converting such as inherent deadfold and anti-static properties, high gloss and transparency, resistance to grease and oil, good barrier to gases and aromas and a wide heat-seal range.

Outlining why Gingerbread Folk opted for NatureFlex™, Karen said, "We were looking for environmentally sound packaging to compliment our all natural gingerbread and ethical business philosophy. We tried many films but loved the look and feel of NatureFlex™ and found the material's properties the most suitable for our purposes. The key factor was home-compostability because we wanted to show the Australian public that it was OK to put these bags in their own home compost bins."

All NatureFlex™ films are cellulose based, derived from renewable wood pulp and are certified to meet both the European EN13432 and American ASTM D6400 standards for compostable packaging. The wood-pulp is sourced from managed plantations from referenced suppliers operating Good Forestry principals (FSC or equivalent). NatureFlex™ films typically have a renewable biobased content of some 95% by weight of material.

Packsys, an Australian based company, is the converter of the NatureFlex™ film in this application and achieved the certified compostable status for the Gingerbread Folk pack. Clive Jacobs of Packsys said, “Being one of the first Australasian companies to achieve the DinCertco certification shows our commitment to compostable packaging. As a plastic packaging converter we have an obligation and responsibility to promote and advise our customers of the compostable and sustainable substrates available.

NatureFlex™ out of all the available materials suits itself extremely well to automated production like flow-wrapping or bag making. The material requires very little machine adjustment and can run in harmony with conventional materials through the same machine. NatureFlex™ is also a very easy material to print and convert. Speeds are not reduced so conversion costs remain on par with other substrates.”

Brands, the Most Valuable Asset Companies Own, Need Protection

Brands have been built up through investment in research, design and quality, furthermore in creating and maintaining consumer satisfaction and loyalty - which is at the heart of the success of manufacturers of branded goods.

Trust in the quality and safety of brands is fundamental to consumer loyalty. Counterfeiting erodes consumer trust in brands, What was in the past only a problem for designer goods and the technical industry became now also a problem for agro chemical products. Farmers believing to have bought a genuine pesticide, when in fact it was a fake, blame their suppliers or the producers of the genuine product, when it fails. This causes a loss of trust on the one side and loss of business on the suppliers side.

As closure supplier to the agro chemical industry, with its unique requirements, Bericap is increasingly challenged by its globally acting agro customers to put more focus on the problem of counterfeiting. The industry spurs on devoting more R&D resources in finding closure solutions, which safeguards against increasing infringements of their intellectual property rights.

Fighting this counterfeiting problem, teamwork is required between packaging specialists of the agro chemical companies and suppliers like Bericap. With its reputation for technical know-how and an in-depth understanding of the market, built up over more than two decades, Bericap is in constant dialogue with leading companies of the industry and places strong emphasis on the development of creative closure solutions and improvements.

Answering the request of the agro chemical industry a range of closures providing a slit tamper evident band have been developed, which cover most of the current neck diameters, used by the industry. The slit T/E band responds to the appeal of the industry for better brand protection as it is difficult to copy the band technology. A specific feature is the drop down T/E band, creating a visible gap between closure and T/E band after unscrewing the closure.

A further protection are closures with clipped-in and freely rotating liners, which allow for the insertion of all sorts of seals such as special vent- or customised hologram types. Another substantial contribution to protect the IPRs of brand owners are closures offering a top print, company logo embossments and special customised labels.

Bericap closures are worldwide available by means of centralised R&D facilities, complemented by decentralised production, close to our customer base.

PAC Machinery Group has a 'Blast' with Environmentally Sensitive Company

BlastBag's innovative waste containment bag sealed by PMG's Vertrod sealer helps to protect the environment.

With a strong focus on developing a product that protects the environment, BlastBag turned to PAC Machinery Group's Vertrod for a powerful heat sealing machine that would aid in the creation of their polyethelene bags.

Vertrod's 96in sealer has helped to get the innovative company BlastBag of LaPorte, Texas, off and running. BlastBag, creates polyethelene containment devices that fit on the heads of heat exchangers to contain wastewater.

Lee Wallace, vice president of operations for BlastBag, who has worked in the chemical industry for over 20 years, says that he chose the Vertrod machine to perform the heavy-duty sealing needed to create the bags for BlastBag.

"PMG's Vertrod machine is integral to BlastBag," says Wallace. "The 96in Vertrod is longer than normal and gives more heat which allows us to use thicker material and make longer seals for BlastBag. We could not live without PMG's support both in the sales and technical areas."

The BlastBag allows for wastewater to be collected until it can be routed to a choice of containment for proper disposal. The BlastBag contains overspray and protects equipment, piping and people. The BlastBag is used for heating industries, chemical plants, refinement facilities and power generation plants. The bags can also be used for other kinds of applications such as general pipe cleanout, vapor traps and dust control.

"Most companies do not always have a way to trap the wastewater, so wastewater seeps into the ground," says Wallace. "Now, with the BlastBag, wastewater is contained until it can be properly disposed of. The BlastBag helps to protect the environment, the personnel operating the machinery and the equipment itself."

PMG fosters strong relationships with businesses to ensure our customers are well supported.

"Not only do we provide technical expertise but we work side-by-side with businesses to develop and craft solutions that fit their application," says Serge Berguig, president of PMG.

PAC Machinery Group (PMG), based out of San Rafael, California, is comprised of three long-time packaging machinery companies. Member companies include Vertrod, creator of thermal impulse sealing; Audion Automation which makes automatic baggers, shrink and skin packaging machines; Converting Technology Inc., which manufactures a wide variety of stock and pre-printed bags; and Packaging Aids Corporation which manufactures vacuum gas flush sealers, vacuum chambers, and specialty bag sealers since 1962.

Clamp the specimen between dry and humid chambers. Due to the humidity difference between the two sides of the specimen, water vapor permeates from high humidity chamber to the low one. And in the low humidity chamber, water vapor is brought to sensor by dry carrier gas; at the meantime, the sensor generates electrolytic signals. By analyzing and calculating those signals, the water vapor transmission rate and permeability coefficient of the material can be determined.

Ugo Foods, Pasta Packaging Upgrade, Hertfordshire

The Ugo Foods Group consists of Del Ugo producing fresh pasta products and also the Oriental Noodle Company that produces fresh noodle products. The company was the first in the UK to offer fresh pasta products, since its introduction of the product in 1929, and has also offered organic fresh pasta to the market since 1967.

"All of the products are supplied in chilled format in modified atmosphere packaging and do not use any artificial preservatives."

Ugo pasta products include a range of shapes and sizes and the company will also produce custom fresh pasta shapes if required. The company's products include handmade ravioli, tortellini, cappelletti, cannelloni, fiorelli, spaghetti, penne and tagliatelle (all in organic and wheat-free versions if required).

In addition, Ugo Foods produces a range of premium handmade fresh pasta under the Del Ugo Brand, including slow-roasted beef and wild mushroom raviolo, jamon serrano and manchego cheese Raviolo and crab and crayfish raviolo.

All of the products are supplied in chilled format in modified atmosphere packaging and do not use any artificial preservatives. Raw ingredients are UK-sourced free range eggs, and Italian-sourced OO grade semolina flour.

NEW PACKAGING

In June 2008 Ugo chose PFM Packaging Machinery Ltd to help meet a new demand for its range of filled pasta shapes. PFM was able to provide a custom packaging solution consisting of a C2 series MBP 12 head multi-head weigher, a conveyor system and a series of vibratory feeders.

These were all custom designed to fit around the existing equipment at the Ugo Foods factory in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire ‐ a complete feeding, weighing and distribution.

"In June 2008 Ugo chose PFM Packaging Machinery Ltd to help meet a new demand for its range of filled pasta shapes."

Ugo has said that the new system, which was designed to weigh at high speeds with extreme precision, has reduced costs through less downtime and waste and has also increased accuracy, efficiency and throughput.

Another benefit was that during installation, there was very little disruption to production.

The conveyor and feeders had to be specially designed by PFM so that they fit onto the existing equipment at the plant.

These were fabricated from stainless steel and as such are extremely robust and able to cope with the high production volumes. The conveyor also has built-in access points for easy access, cleaning and maintenance.

Paul Ugo, managing director of Ugo Foods, commented: "I have been thoroughly impressed with PFM's depth of knowledge and adaptability in installing this complete system around our existing factory equipment. PFM's expertise in the design of the equipment and finished line has been invaluable to us.

"We are now experiencing reduced downtime and less product waste, which has resulted in significant reductions in costs and easier changeover operations, so less maintenance is now required. The service provided by PFM has been outstanding and I would not hesitate in recommending them to others."

Wyke Farms, Weigher Upgrade,

Wyke Farms is one of the largest independent cheese producers and milk processors in the UK. The company was founded on the basis of their original farmhouse cheddar recipe in 1902. After over 100 years of cheese making the company now sells over 14,000t of cheese every year.

"The Wyke Farms cheddar brand is one of the fastest growing in the UK and is available in 25,000 stores across the country."

The Wyke Farms cheddar brand is one of the fastest growing in the UK with a rate of 50% year on year and is available in 25,000 stores across the country. The company produces a full range of cheese as well as butter; the products range from mild to extra-mature cheddar and also half fat and very low fat cheese.

One of the latest products, released in December 2007, is a full flavour cheese for diet guru Rosemary Conley's food range with less than 5% fat. The cheese contains fewer than half of the calories of normal cheddar but no less protein or calcium and also has a full flavour.

Rosemary Conley commented: "The indulgent taste and wonderful texture means that even the most experienced palate would find it difficult to believe this cheddar has less than 5% fat."

Richard Clothier, managing director of Wyke Farms, commented: "We have been listening to our customers carefully and are working on what's really important to them. It's a pleasure working with Rosemary who has been invaluable in developing healthier and really low fat cheddar."

PACKAGING UPGRADE

In January 2007 Wyke Farms continued its relationship with PFM Packaging by installing an MBP14 multi-head weigher on the main packaging line at the Brunton facility in Somerset. The new equipment was integrated with four units of PFM equipment installed after previous equipment updates.

A Scirocco, which is a servo-assisted flow wrap machine to produce airtight packs with three seals starting from a reel of heat-sealable packaging material (also designed for modified atmosphere) was installed in November 2006. A Tornado servo-assisted horizontal flow wrapping machine was installed in December 1998, a Polar VFFS (vertical form-fill-seal) machine was installed in 1996 and a Tornado Mechanical in 1994.

The fourth upgrade to the Burnton plant marks the confidence that Wyke Farms have in equipment from PFM Packaging.
"In January 2007 Wyke Farms continued its relationship with PFM Packaging by installing an MBP14 multi-head weigher at the Brunton facility."

WEIGHER UPDATE

The 14-head weigher chosen by Wyke is suitable for handling a medium to high output. It uses electric stepper motors rather than a pneumatic bucket for greater control and quieter operation. Cheese production at Wyke Farms is now capable of achieving over 20,000t a year and a weigher was required that could cope with the volume and allow high-speed, accurate operation.

The new machine is now being used to weigh grated cheese in one and two kilo bags that are sold to the service sector for the production of sandwiches and wraps and also for fast food such as pizzas.

The machine is handling 2.5t per hour (10t per shift) but can give much higher output in the future when the Brunton facility expands its cheese production volume. This equates to the weigher handling 15‐20 2kg bags each minute or 20‐30 of 1kg size.

AJ and RG Barber Cheese Packaging Upgrade, Somerset

AJ and RG Barber is a small farmhouse cheese producer based in Somerset in the UK, milking a herd of 1,700 cows. The Barber family have been farmers and cheese producers in the area since the 1800s and now produce a specialist range of cheeses including West Country Farmhouse Cheddar, Red Leicester, Double Gloucester, Wensleydale, White Cheshire, Lancashire, and Caerphilly.

"Barbers now mainly specialises in the production of block cheeses from 2.5g to 5kg and 20kg."

The company is also a supplier of the popular continental cheeses Gouda and Edam, and the UK specialist cheese Stilton.

Barbers produces Glastonbury Festival Mature Cheddar ('Festival Cheddar'), which is made with the milk from the music festival site, Worthy Farm, and also other surrounding local farms. A charitable donation of 10p is made to 'Water Aid' for every kilogram of Festival Cheddar sold.

The cheese produced is distributed through Tesco, Sainsburys, the farm shop and local retailers in Shepton Mallet.

PACKAGING FORMATS

Barbers now mainly specialises in the production of block cheeses from 2.5g to 5kg and 20kg. The company can also prepare blocks that are then cut into pieces and packed in rectangular blocks for retail sale. It can supply truckles in sizes from 250g right up to 8kg.

In April 2008 PFM Packaging was asked to install a new Scirocco servo-assisted horizontal flow wrapping machine at the Barber facility at Maryland Farm in Ditcheat, Shepton Mallet.

The machine was commissioned because it saves on downtime from product changeovers, allowing smaller production runs if required. In addition, the machine is more amenable to the varied pack sizes demanded by customers for product differentiation.

"The Scirocco can pack cut portioned cheese at a speed of up to 200 packs per minute."

NEW PACKAGING SYSTEM

Prior to the installation Barbers had to run two production lines, one for the major supermarkets requiring 65t of cheese per week to be packed in differing shapes and sizes and the other for smaller retailers. Following the installation of the Scirocco single jaw system the production plans for the company have been made much simpler.

The Scirocco can pack cut portioned cheese at a speed of up to 200 packs per minute (product allowing) and is able to produce a wide variety of flow pack sizes. The machine has automatic height adjustment and has a fully programmable screen. It is easy to clean following a production run as the electronics are contained separately at the back and the machine is fully accessible.

The machine is also equipped with a modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) system that can provide excellent hermetic seals at the full run speed of 200 packs per minute.
