UK Launches Food Labelling Code

25 February 2010

The British Government has launched a new food labelling code to make the origin of pork clearer on food packaging.

The Department for Food Environment and Rural Affairs (Defra) has launched the new food labelling to avoid ambiguity over the term 'produced in the UK' as this can currently be used even when a product comes from abroad but is only processed and packaged in the UK.

The code will mean that pork recipes from particular areas of the UK, like Wiltshire cured ham, or products that include a British flag or images of typical UK countryside will also have to provide information on where the meat is from originally, reports The Telegraph newspaper.

The new code was announced by Hilary Benn, the Environment Secretary, at the National Farmers Union annual conference.
