Walmart to Cut Product Packaging as Part of Eco Goals

1 March 2010

US retail giant Walmart said it is planning to reduce 20 million tons of carbon emissions from its global supply chain by 2015.

The company said it would work with suppliers to reduce product packaging or change the source of raw materials to cut the use of harmful emissions from manufacturing processes.

In 2008 the company's carbon footprint from its global store operations was nearly 21 million tons.

Walmart estimates its footprint will grow by more than 10 million additional tons over the next five years, even if it pursues the new supply chain goals.

The company said that more than 90% of its emissions come from its supply chain, rather than from its store and logistics operations.
