Kureha PGA to Reduce PET Use

1 March 2010

Kureha PGA, a subsidiary of Kureha Corporation, plans to start the commercial production of polyglycolic acid (PGA) at a specialty plastic plant in Belle, West Virginia, US.

The Japanese firm said the PGA will enable the bottlers of soft drinks and beer to reduce their PET use by 20%.

The $100m plant is expected to produce 9 million pounds of PGA a year. PGA is a polyester that can be used as a barrier resin in multilayer PET bottles.

Kureha expects the construction work of the site to be completed by July. The company has already started product trials in Africa, Kureha said.
