The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has warned units of Nestle and other food manufacturers about overstating or misstating the nutritional value of baby food, nuts and other products on their labels.
The FDA said the companies are making claims on their food packages and websites over antioxidant advantages, trans-fat content and omega-3 benefits that fail to meet FDA guidelines.
The FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg said that the food manufacturers should give clarification about what was expected of them as they review their current labelling, reports Reuters.
The FDA is planning to issue draft guidelines for nutritional labelling and to work with the food industry on a new labelling system, Hamburg said.
Companies that received warnings from the FDA include Gerber, a unit of Nestle, Beech-Nut, a unit Hero Group, Spectrum Organic Products, a unit of Hain Celestial, and Diamond Foods.
