Tesco to Switch to Plastic Bottles

5 March 2010

Retail giant Tesco said it is trialling the use of plastic bottles for its own brand of spirits, as well as introducing lightweight glass wine bottles as part of efforts to reduce carbon emissions from packaging.

The British supermarket chain said the new containers will reduce packaging by 86% and annually save 200,000kg of material.

Tesco has also launched lightweight wine bottles of 300g, which it said are 30% lighter than its previous lightest bottles.

The company, which has signed up the second phase of the Courtauld Commitment with waste reduction body WRAP, said its new wine bottles will save 560t of glass annually.

Tesco said it is working with suppliers to cut packaging of products on 4,000 projects to reach a target of 30% carbon reduction in supply chain by 2020.
