Plastics Recycling Target Not Achievable, Says UK Body

9 March 2010

UK packaging manufacturers have hit out at the government's recently proposed packaging recycling targets, according to recycling bodies.

The British Plastics Federation (BPF) public & industrial affairs director Philip Law said the target, a massive increase of 32%, is not achievable in ten years.

"This would not be possible, even if there was a necessary huge investment in the recycling infrastructure and standardised local authority collection, sorting and recycling systems, which we do not have," Law said.

BPF said Germany had an active plastics recycling scheme for 15 years and managed to achieve a 42% recycling rate.

The industry reactions followed after Defra proposed a new packaging recycling target rate of 56.9% by 2020, a increase from the 29% target set by the UK packaging regulations for 2010.
