Sonoco Recycling is planning to restructure its Charlotte recycling centre and transform it into a full-scale material recovery facility (MRF) by early summer.
The US-based packaging recycling firm said the $2.6m project includes the installation of new sorting screens, separators, high-speed conveyors and steel disks.
The upgrade brings the number of MRFs owned by the company to three in the southeast, while others are located in Raleigh, North Carolina and South Carolina.
In November, Sonoco Recycling completed a $2m expansion project at the Charlotte centre, which expanded the facility's footprint by 23,500ft² and included the installation of new commercial sorting and baling equipment.
Sonoco Recycling's Charlotte centre accepts and processes corrugated boxes and other grades of paper as well as flexible plastics.
