Ball and Unilever develop new lightweight aluminium aerosol can

US-based can maker Ball, in collaboration with consumer goods company Unilever, has developed a more sustainable and lighter weight aluminium aerosol can.

As part of the partnership, the 150ml aerosol cans were developed for Unilever's Rexona and Sure antiperspirant brand.

To create the new solution, Ball created a new metal alloy that exhibits increased strength and reduces the weight of the extruded aerosol can by 20%.

The new cans also have an 18% lower carbon footprint compared to standard aerosol cans.

"Ball created a new metal alloy that exhibits increased strength and reduces the weight of the extruded aerosol can by 20%."

Ball is supplying the Rexona and Sure antiperspirant aluminium aerosol cans for the European market.

In June 2016, the company created a new suite of G3-HD two-piece tinplate aerosol cans for Faultless Starch / Bon Ami Company.

The recyclable cans feature high-definition, eight-colour, in-line graphics.

With around 18,450 employees, Ball currently provides innovative, sustainable packaging solutions for beverage, food and household products customers.

Unilever supports the Aluminium Packaging Recycling Organisation (ALUPRO) and the British Aerosol Manufacturers' Association (BAMA) in encouraging local authorities to collect empty aerosols.

In 2012, the company joined the MetalMatters funding partnership, which seeks to increase recycling rates and consumer awareness.
