Dell is set to use new packaging trays made from 25% recycled ocean plastics content, marking the first solution of its kind used in the technology industry for product shipment.

The newly developed trays will be used to ship Dell’s XPS 13 2-in-1 computer, beginning from 30 April.

The trays have been developed as part of a pilot programme of Dell, which intends to keep 16,000lb of plastic from entering the ocean in 2017.

Additionally, the trays support Dell’s Legacy of Good programme, under which the company aims to achieve the goal of having full sustainable packaging by 2020.

Dell chief supply chain officer Kevin Brown said: “I have been in supply chain and operations for twenty years, and this is the first time my ten-year-old daughter has gotten excited about what I do.

“This new packaging initiative demonstrates that there are real global business applications for ocean plastics that deliver positive results for our business and planet. We look forward to working across industries for broader impact.”

Before developing the trays, Dell and its partners collected several plastics at various waterway sources, shorelines and beaches before it reaches the ocean.

The collected plastics (25%) were then processed and refined with other recycled high-density polyethylene (HDPE) bottles and food storage containers to produce the packaging trays.

In order to help ensure the packaging does not end up back in the oceans, Dell is planning to stamp each tray with a recycling symbol.
