Nestlé invests in new packaging talents
Swiss food giant Nestlé has supported a six-week project at Nottingham Trent University students in the UK to create new packaging designs for its chocolate treats.
The company briefed the students on designing a new range of fun and engaging packaging solutions for its existing brand at a new lower price point.
As a part of the project, students were required to consider the materials that were used, the visibility the packaging would have on a fixture and the complete life-cycle of the product from sale to consumption and disposal.
Nestlé designers and packaging experts offered a number of workshops to the students, making them think over various aspects of the design, before ten designs were chosen to be developed and exhibited at its York-based Confectionery UK headquarters.
University student Simon Wilsher emerged as the winner for his design 'The family' - a collection of four characters, aimed at creating an engaging interaction for the consumer.
Nestlé will offer Wilsher a two-week work placement at their Product Technology Centre, based in York, which is the company's lead centre for research and development in confectionery worldwide.
Product Technology Centre senior designer Ross Taylor said that although people frequently overlook packaging design, it is more important than the product inside it.
"Simon's concept was well researched and thought through. The way the consumers could interact with the packaging design also showed that he had a good understanding of the product and market," Taylor said.
Nottingham Trent University senior lecturer Jamie Billing said that live projects provide an excellent opportunity for students to experience working with clients to a specific brief.
"We have built up an excellent relationship with Nestlé and it is great to see another of our students benefiting from a placement with them," Billing added.
