NiceLabel has developed a smart label solution that will help food suppliers and producers comply with new EU food labelling regulations.

Effective 13 December, all manufacturers, sellers and importers of food products in the European market need to comply with a new EU food regulation that calls for the mandatory information on food packages or labels. The information includes food name, ingredients details and net quantity.

One of the major challenges faced by the firms is the labelling of certain substances or products that cause allergies or intolerances. The regulation will require food suppliers to clearly mention allergens in the ingredients list, emphasising the font, style or background colour.

Designed to work on any existing page or label printer, NiceLabel’s solution allows food companies to format the allergens text before printing. The company says that the solution generates smart labels with minimum effort and changes to current procedures or hardware. This eliminates the need to purchase new printers and allows firms to automatically highlight allergens without modifying existing databases.

The NiceLabel solution is suitable for on-demand labelling such as bakery, sandwich, delicatessen, and other retail and catering applications.

NiceLabel global marketing director Ken Moir said that upon implementation, the allergens and related descriptors database can be easily maintained, including in the case of multi-lingual labels.

"The NiceLabel food allergens solution produces labels which automatically and clearly emphasise the 14 substances listed within the EU regulations and also have the flexibility for related words to be highlighted as desired," Moir added.
