Waitrose

UK supermarket giant Waitrose has selected SIG Combibloc’s heat-resistant combisafe carton pack for its Passata range, which previously used glass jars.

Instead of a 680g glass jar, the firm’s Passata with Basil, and Passata with Garlic and Onion products will now come in 500ml combisafe carton packs.

The pack features SIG Combibloc’s flexible filling technology with an opening at the top that is sealed ultrasonically.

This makes the carton pack easy to open and can reduce wastage of food by facilitating easy pouring and spooning, which ensures that all the content can be removed.

"Switching to SIG Combibloc’s combisafe carton pack means we can now offer our discerning customers a lighter long-life alternative."

Waitrose category manager for the initiative John Vine said: "Switching to SIG Combibloc’s combisafe carton pack means we can now offer our discerning customers a lighter long-life alternative, which also guarantees first-class quality and product protection from our stores to kitchen cupboard storage."

The rectangular shape of the carton pack can also ensure storage efficiency for the manufacturers and retailers, SIG Combibloc claimed.

The shape can fill up the available space on supermarket shelves around 30% better than food metal cans and also deliver high-visual impact.

Vine added: "The carton pack’s impact on the environment will also be an important factor both to Waitrose and our environmentally aware customers.

"The low weight of the carton pack, due to resource-efficient use of raw materials, plus the excellent environmental performance of the unprocessed cardboard, are major factors in why the combisafe carton pack has the best environmental performance."
