The FDA Needs to Reassess its Approach to Protecting Consumers from False or Misleading Claims
The US Government Accountability Office (GAO) published this report in January 2011. It recommends that the FDA ask Congress to access companies' evidence for potentially false or misleading structure claims on food labelling to establish scientific support.
In 2002, in response to a court decision, the FDA decided to allow qualified health claims with less scientific support on food packaging.
