Smurfit Kappa to upgrade kraftliner mill in Piteå, Sweden

Paper-based packaging firm Smurfit Kappa is set to carry out a series of upgrades to its flagship kraftliner mill in Piteå, Sweden.

The company will work on increasing the sustainability and efficiency of its cooking plant and recovery boiler at the kraftliner facility in a bid to further reduce emissions.

It will also install high-spec purification filters and an advanced combustion system at the facility.


Blackstone to acquire 51% stake in Essel Propack

US-based Blackstone Group announced that private equity funds managed by the group entered a definitive agreement with Ashok Goel Trust to purchase a 51% stake in India’s rigid plastic packaging provider Essel Propack (EPL).

Ashok Goel Trust and its affiliates hold a 57% stake in EPL. Blackstone will buy the stake from the Trust at Rs134 ($1.92) per share.

Under the Takeover Code in India, Blackstone and Epsilon BidCo triggered a mandatory open offer following their proposal to purchase an additional 26% in Essel for Rs11.42bn ($163.92m).

New York Governor signs new law to ban single-use plastic bags

New York Governor Andrew M Cuomo signed a new law that bans the sale of single-use plastic bags in the US state beginning March 2020.

With this bill, New York joins California and Hawaii, which are the only states in the US where single-use plastic bags are banned.

The legislation focuses on reducing plastic pollution and protecting marine and wildlife. It will also help to lower greenhouse gas emissions associated with plastic bag production and disposal.


ProAmpac updates child-resistant pouch product line

Flexible packaging manufacturer ProAmpac unveiled an updated range of child-resistant, reclosable, easy-open (CRREO) pouches in an expanded range of sizes.

ProAmpac’s CRREO pouches meet all of the compliance requirements of the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSA) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The pouches are specially formulated to package personal and homecare, chemical and agricultural products, as well as pharmaceutical, health and cannabis merchandise.


Tekni-Plex to buy three Amcor production facilities for $215m

Packaging materials manufacturer Tekni-Plex entered a definitive purchase agreement to buy three production facilities from Australian packaging company Amcor’s Flexible Packaging business unit for a cash consideration of $215m.

The three facilities are located in Madison and Milwaukee in Wisconsin, US, and Ashland in Massachusetts, US.

Amcor produces sterilisable medical device packaging substrates such as coated and uncoated Tyvek, along with heat-seal and cold-seal coated paper and films, medical grade laminates as well as die-cut lids and labels at the three plants.


DS Smith to sell two packaging businesses to International Paper

UK-based DS Smith agreed to sell two of its packaging businesses to US-based pulp and paper company International Paper for €63m ($71.16m).

The two business sales, which are located in North Western France and Portugal, will fulfil the commitment made to the European Commission in relation to the clearance of Papeles y Cartones de Europa (Europac) acquisition by DS Smith.

The €1.904bn ($2.2bn) acquisition concluded in January.


Henkel and TerraCycle introduce free recycling programme in Canada

German chemical and consumer goods company Henkel started a free recycling programme across Canada for its Sunlight and Purex plastic detergent pouches in partnership with TerraCycle.

As part of the programme, customers will receive TerraCycle points that can be redeemed for charity gifts or converted to cash by recycling the empty containers of Sunlight or Purex pouches in the country.

To participate in the programme, customers are required to sign up on the TerraCycle programme page and mail the package using a prepaid shipping label.


Ardagh to expand two beverage can facilities in Brazil

Ardagh Group announced plans to expand its Jacareí can and Manaus ends production facilities in Brazil this year.

The decision to expand the facilities is part of the company’s commitment to supporting the growth in the Brazilian can market, and will allow it to cater to the customers’ demand for infinitely recyclable and sustainable aluminium packaging.

According to the company, the Jacareí can facility was established in 2017 while the Manaus ends facility was commissioned last year. Both facilities are operating at full capacity and will increase production further.


Nestlé Waters, PepsiCo and Suntory to boost PET plastic recyclability

Nestlé Waters, PepsiCo, and Suntory Beverage and Food Europe teamed up to support the recyclability of products made from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic.

The beverage firms joined the consortium founded by Carbios and L’Oréal in a bid to work collaboratively in enhancing the enzymatic recycling technology.

Carbios CEO Jean-Claude Lumaret said: “We are thrilled to welcome Nestlé Waters, PepsiCo, and Suntory Beverage and Food Europe into the consortium we have created with L’Oréal.


Diageo announces removal of plastic from beer packaging

British alcohol distributor Diageo announced plans to remove plastic packaging from its multi-can beer packs, including Guinness, Harp, and Smithwick’s.

Diageo is investing £16m to reduce plastics used in beer packaging, by removing the plastic ring carriers and shrink wrap from beer multipacks.

Multi-can packs will be replaced by sustainably sourced cardboard packs, which are recyclable and fully biodegradable, with individual cans also being fully recyclable, including the widget inside cans of Draught Guinness.
