Henkel and ALPLA to add new packaging operation at Bowling Green site

German consumer goods firm Henkel is set to partner with its packaging supplier ALPLA to invest $130 million in infrastructure and equipment at its Bowling Green facility in Kentucky, US.

Both companies will use the investment to add more than 170,000ft² of additional space and create a new packaging operation.

As part of the partnership, both bottle and laundry supplies production areas will receive investments to create new infrastructure and add equipment.


Tesco commits to banning brands with excessive plastic packaging

UK supermarket chain Tesco announced it will ban brands that use excessive plastic packaging and remove excess packaging from its own-brand ranges.

The move is a part of the second phase of Tesco’s Remove, Reduce, Reuse & Recycle plan.

The retailer held four meetings with over 1,500 suppliers to outline its vision for the next stage of its packaging plan, informing suppliers that the size and suitability of packaging will be assessed from next year.

Coca-Cola Ireland starts using 50% recycled plastic for 500ml bottles

Coca-Cola Ireland started producing 500ml and smaller bottles using 50% recycled plastic.

The move was planned in cooperation with its local bottling partner Coca-Cola Hellenic Bottling Company (Coca-Cola HBC).

The change to recycled polyethene terephthalate (rPET) is expected to reduce approximately 2,000t of virgin plastic every year.


FDA proposes new health warnings on cigarette packages

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) proposed legislation that requires companies to feature new health warnings on cigarette packaging and in advertisements.

The agency’s decision aims to create public awareness by promoting the negative health consequences of smoking.

As part of this law, cigarette packaging will now feature photo-realistic colour images depicting the lesser-known, yet serious health risks of cigarette smoking such as bladder cancer, diabetes, erectile dysfunction and conditions that can cause blindness.


Germany plans to impose ban on plastic bags

German Environment Minister Svenja Schulze is considering plans for a new law to ban plastic shopping bags.

The move seeks to reduce the use of plastic packaging in the country and is part of the European Union-wide effort to tackle pollution.

Schulze said: “My ministry will get a plastic bag ban on its way.”


Sonoco buys US packaging supplier Corenso Holdings

Global packaging company Sonoco closed the deal to purchase US supplier Corenso Holdings America (CHA) for approximately $110m.

CHA was acquired from a company owned by investment funds advised by Madison Dearborn Partners and management. The parties signed a definitive agreement in May.

Sonoco president and chief executive officer Rob Tiede said: “We are extremely pleased to welcome Corenso Holdings America to Sonoco.


McDonald’s revamps McCafé with new brand look in US

Global fast-food chain McDonald’s revamped the brand identity of its McCafé in the US with a new look.

The development will mark the celebration of the brand’s tenth anniversary.

McCafé now features an updated logo, new golden cups to match the company’s gold standard for quality coffee and a new brand tagline: ‘Good is Brewing’.


Bemis Healthcare Packaging Europe to merge with Nelipak

Private equity (PE) firm Kohlberg & Company closed the acquisition of Bemis Healthcare Packaging Europe.

Kohlberg acquired the business from Australian packaging firm Amcor’s Flexible Packaging business unit.

As part of the deal, the PE firm will merge the acquired business unit with its rigid healthcare packaging unit Nelipak.


Study reveals single-use beverage cartons more eco-friendly than PET

A new environmental lifecycle assessment (LCA) revealed that single-use beverage cartons offer more environmental advantages when compared to alternative forms of packaging.

The study was conducted by the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research (IFEU) to meet the new German Federal Environment Agency (UBA) requirements for beverage packaging life cycle assessments in the country.


Molson Coors proposes to reduce plastic packaging

MillerCoors’ parent company Molson Coors proposed to make 100% of its packaging reusable, recyclable, compostable or biodegradable by 2025.

The move is part of the company’s new wave of sustainability goals introduced in August.

The company is also planning to use more recycled materials in its plastic packaging, enhance recycling efforts in major markets and reduce packaging emissions.
