UK’s Spectra invests in new injection stretch blow moulding machinery

Spectra Packaging installed new injection stretch blow moulding machinery at its facility in Suffolk, UK, to meet growing customer demand for polyethylene terephthalate (PET) products.

The new machine is the second unit installed by the company in 2016.

The investment was followed by recent expansion initiatives carried out across Spectra.

Mexico’s Grupo Gondi to install 11 production lines from BOBST and BHS Corrugated

Mexican paper and packaging manufacturer Grupo Gondi has entered a deal to buy 11 production lines from Switzerland’s BOBST and Germany’s BHS Corrugated.

The newly ordered equipment included two 2.5m-wide corrugators, a BOBST pre-print press line, flat-bed BOBST die-cutters, and five automated BOBST folding and gluing lines.

r-pac International selects Solegear’s plant-based bioplastic for smartphone case packaging

Canadian firm Solegear Bioplastic Technologies (Solegear) and US-based retail packaging provider r-pac International have won an order to provide plant-based bioplastic for smartphone case packaging.

Under the deal, Solegear’s Traverse TF4000 bioplastic will be used for 600,000 smartphone case packages that will be produced by r-pac for a major US-based consumer electronics retailer.

Deliveries under the order will be carried out  from this quarter onwards.

US’ Sun Basket unveils new recyclable and compostable packaging for meal kit industry

US-based Sun Basket launched a new range of fully recyclable and compostable packaging solutions, including insulation, ice packs and bags, for the country's meal kit industry.

Made from a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fibre, the company's new insulation liner also features recyclable stickers, which are used to roll up the solution.

All ice packs used in Sun Basket’s new solution are filled with 98% water and 2% cotton, and can be composted or thrown in the bin to evaporate.

India’s Essel Propack opens new tube manufacturing facility in Colombia

India-based specialty packaging company Essel Propack opened a new plant in Cali, Colombia, to manufacture laminated tubes for the cosmetics, pharmaceutical and food sectors.

Equipped with a pharma clean room, the new facility will allow the company to meet growing demand in the South American market with enhanced capabilities.

The plant has the capacity to manufacture 180 million tubes per year, and provides an opportunity to export laminated tubes in the nearby Andean markets of Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Venezuela and Chile.

Food packaging company Sabert buys US firm Mullinix

New Jersey-based global food packaging company Sabert Corporation acquired Mullinix Packages, a US provider of plastic packaging solutions to food processors and the foodservice industry, from private equity investment firm Mason Wells.

Financial details of the deal have not been disclosed, but Sabert's annual sales are expected to exceed $500m with the addition of Mullinix.

Sabert founder and chief executive officer Albert Salama said: "Mullinix has an experienced and talented team with superior technical capabilities.

Uflex introduces new extrusion lamination machine in India

India-based flexible packaging company Uflex launched its EL-1300 extrusion lamination machine.

The machine is also designed to laminate very thin low-density polyethylene (LDPE) substrates to woven polypropylene (WPP), paper or any other packaging film.

At a maximum speed of 250m/minute, EL-1300 allows corona treater to be easily integrated into flexible packaging extrusion coating and lamination lines.

Multi-Color enhances workflow with new and updated EFI workflow software

Multi-Color added a dynamic scheduling and resource optimisation component to its packaging suite from Electronics For Imaging (EFI).

The company had already used the suite’s core EFI Radius enterprise resource planning (ERP) system with integrated, scheduling technology.

With the new component, Multi-Color is said to have extended its software to provide an even higher level of visibility and control across the enterprise.

Indian Institute of Science scientists develop new graphene-infused packaging

Scientists from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, developed a new type of packaging that incorporates a single layer of graphene to protect packaged goods from moisture.

The newly developed material is capable of preventing water molecules from entering packaged products, such as electronics and medicines.

During the development of the new material, the researchers synthesised a single layer of graphene via chemical vapour deposition, and used a simple and scalable process to convert the graphene to a polymer film.
