IML Labels deploys Xeikon technology for in-mould labels

Canada-based IML Labels installed a Xeikon 3500 digital colour press, in order to print in-mould labels digitally.

With a capacity to handle substrate widths up to 516mm (20.3in), Xeikon 3500 has the capability of producing labels in various formats by running ICE toner, which is now the standard toner for printing in-mould labels.

Additionally, the company installed a UCoat finishing unit that will provide inline flood aqueous coating, as well as cut-to-sheet capabilities.

Canadian Cancer Society report points to rise in plain tobacco packaging

Global demand for the implementation of plain packaging for tobacco products is increasing, according to data presented by the Canadian Cancer Society.

The Canadian Cancer Society report, Cigarette Package Health Warnings: International Status Report, announced rankings for 198 countries and jurisdictions based on the size of their health warnings on cigarette packages, as well as listing countries that have finalised requirements for picture warnings.

Faerch Plast develops ovenable skin pack for meat packaging

Danish food packaging specialist Faerch Plast developed a new dual ovenable skin pack for meat and poultry packaging that can be placed directly into the oven or microwave without removing any immediate packaging.

The development forms part of the company’s strategy to increase its market share in the meat and poultry sector.

The lightweight ovenable crystalline polyethylene terephthalate (CPET) packaging has been developed under a partnership with ABP and Bemis Flexible Packaging.

Tyler Packaging introduces new directional laser technology

British flexible packaging specialist Tyler Packaging introduced new directional laser technology, in a move to enhance its packaging capabilities.

The company said that the directional laser technology enables complex shapes to be cut out of the outer layer of a laminated pouch or bag. This creates see-through windows so consumers can view the contents of the packaging without any of the barrier properties being lost in the process.

Tyler Packaging sales and technical director Adam Kay said: "By introducing a new packaging technology, we are able to innovate our processes and offer a greater range of packaging solutions to our clients."

Tosca launches SmartWall RPC for egg packaging

Reusable packaging specialist Tosca introduced a reusable plastic container (RPC) for packing, shipping and displaying individual cartons of eggs using the SmartWall design.

The package will simplify re-stocking and reduce shrinkage from damaged goods by reducing labour and waste.

Sensitech’s study, conducted in April, found that the new containers enable the eggs to be cooled ten times faster, when compared with other corrugated cardboard.

AEA Investors completes acquisition of Pro Mach

Private equity firm AEA Investors completed the acquisition of packaging equipment company Pro Mach, a previously announced deal worth $1bn.

Pro Mach has manufacturing facilities and offices throughout the US, Canada and Europe. It offers packaging machinery and integrated systems, with more than 25 equipment brands sold worldwide.

Headquartered in Ohio, US, Pro Mach manufactures and integrates bottling and capping, primary packaging, flexible packaging, material handling, identification and tracking, and end-of-line packaging solutions.

Bemis invests $25m in Wisconsin plant expansion

Pharmaceutical packaging company Bemis Healthcare Packaging announced an investment of about $25m in the expansion of its facility in Wisconsin, US.

Expected to create nearly 160 jobs, the expansion will see the renovation of a building next to its existing plant, as well as the combining of the two buildings into one contiguous facility.

Renovation of the 110,000ft² building will increase the size of the company’s existing facility to 215,000ft². The facility is expected to be open 24/7.

Mossberg & Company acquires new label press

Mossberg & Company invested in new labelling technology with the purchase of an HP6800 Digital Roll Label Press with Delta Spectrum finishing equipment.

Expected to be installed in mid-October, the press will become completely operational by the end of the year and will provide high-volume production.

Mossberg is targeting the needs of demanding brands by offering them high-impact product decoration and packaging, using seven digital ink units coupled with the Mossberg precision colour system.
