UK-based label printer Abbey Labels has developed a die-cutting solution in collaboration with Dutch press manufacturer MPS Systems and British finishing company AB Graphics.

The AB Graphics Fast Track semi-rotary die cutting system has been installed on an automated MPS EFS 340 flexo press, which has been deployed at Abbey Labels’ facility.
The die-cutting system is part of the UK company’s operation optimisation programme. The installation is expected to reduce the production time and save costs.

Abbey Labels chairman Tom Allum said: “I firmly believe that this press with this particular option is a real game-changer not only for us, but for the flexo industry.
“The benefits in time savings should be immense. We’re a short to medium run printer and we’re constantly changing size, so if you’re saving 20 minutes every time you do that, we’re looking at a huge improvement.”

The new semi-rotary operates with double the speed of conventional die-cutting systems. The die-cutting module has a top speed of 150m/min and a repeat of up to 508mm.

The technology is an important addition since traditional die-cutting systems decrease the speed of press based on die size repeat.

Additionally, the magnetic cylinder used in the system makes its maintenance easier.
MPS UK sales director Nick Tyrer said: “When Abbey Labels first introduced the idea of us combining the ABG Fast Track Die with our EF platform, we had a few reservations in terms of integration and what it would involve.
