The Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment (ACE UK), in collaboration with Cornwall Council, has launched new ‘bring banks’ at seven household waste recycling centres (HWRC) in the county, in a move to recycle cartons and paper cups.

As part of this pilot launch, Cornwall Council is urging residents to recycle food and drink cartons and paper cups along with any other waste using the new ‘bring banks’.

The ‘bring banks’ are supplied by ACE UK representing its members Tetra Pak, Elopak and SIG Combibloc. The alliance is also funding the two-year pilot service.

“Having bring banks based at our HWRCs will allow people to bring their cartons with them when making a trip to their local centre.”

Cornwall Council environment and public protection portfolio holder Sue James said: “People have been asking about recycling food and beverage cartons for some time, so I’m pleased ACE UK are working with us to provide this service at seven of our HWRCs.

“Having bring banks based at our HWRCs will allow people to bring their cartons with them when making a trip to their local centre.

“We know from surveys that residents want to be able to recycle more. While we can’t include this as part of our current kerbside collections we are asking the bidders for the 2020 kerbside collection contract to consider collecting additional materials, such as these cartons.”

ACE will collect all cartons and paper cups from the recycling banks and will move them to its specialist facility near Halifax.

According to ACE, around 450t of beverage cartons are put out for waste collection in Cornwall each year.

The seven HWRC centres in Cornwall have the capacity to handle more than 80,000t of waste a year.
