A new report released by Alliance to End Plastic Waste (AEPW) has outlined the international non-profit organisation’s and member project milestones.

The 2020 Progress Report details efforts, investments and commitments to end plastic waste. The cross-value chain AEPW is currently made up of nearly 50 member companies.

AEPW revealed that it started 14 projects in six countries in Asia and Africa.

It also said that 55 member-led projects are currently being worked on. These projects have seen an investment of $400m.

The investment is part of Alliance and member’s $1.5bn commitment in environmental projects over the next five years.

Alliance to End Plastic Waste president and CEO Jacob Duer said: “We have to act with urgency as lack of action will result in millions of tons of plastic waste continuing to leak into the ocean if we do nothing today.

“The progress the Alliance is making in just 18 months is the start of a long road ahead. But we can shorten the road significantly when we act together across industry, governments, civil society and development agencies.

“The problem is solvable, and our strategy is to apply a holistic approach backed by deep technical knowledge and resources from the full plastic value chain.”

The report also unveiled the 2025 Ambition, which focuses on infrastructure development, innovation, clean-up and education and engagement.

Duer added: “Our ambition, over five years, is to divert millions of tonnes of plastic waste in more than 100 at-risk cities across the globe, improve livelihoods for millions and contribute to a circular economy.”

Last month, the Alliance announced the first partnership and investment in the Philippines with The Plastic Flamingo.
