Aldi has announced plans to reduce plastic waste by introducing 100% recyclable pizza discs throughout its UK supermarkets.

The 100% recyclable discs are made using cardboard instead of polystyrene.

According to the company, the initiative will reduce 180t of plastic every year.

Aldi UK corporate responsibility managing director Fritz Walleczek was quoted by media publications as saying: “Polystyrene pizza discs are a serial offender when it comes to waste packaging, so it’s important that we tackle this issue directly.

“This move is one part of a much larger campaign to reduce our environmental impact wherever possible – be that food waste, packaging or emissions.

“Introducing recyclable pizza discs across our entire range is another step towards our aim for all product packaging to be 100% recyclable by 2025.”

The supermarket chain is also reducing the size of its Thin & Crispy pizza cartons in a move to cut the amount of cardboard used by 73t annually.

In July, Aldi US announced its plans to use How2Recycle labelling across all brand products in the next two years.

In March, Aldi pledged to use only recyclable, reusable or compostable packaging for its own-label products by 2022 in a move to combat plastic waste.

As part of the initiative, the retailer stopped selling its 5p bags across its business, and now offers reusable 9p bags manufactured from plastic waste to customers.
