ALPLA has partnered with Swedish paper packaging materials and solutions provider BillerudKorsnäs to develop a completely sustainable paper bottle.

Under the initiative, both the companies agreed to form a joint venture (JV) in the Danish paper bottle company ecoXpac.

BillerudKorsnäs is currently the majority stakeholder of ecoXpac.

Once completed, ALPLA and BillerudKorsnäs will own an equal stake in ecoXpac, which will advance the development of sustainable paper bottles.

The JV will leverage individual expertise and resources of the two companies to support the development and commercialisation of a completely bio-based and recyclable paper bottle.

ALPLA CEO Günther Lehner said: “With BillerudKorsnäs, we have found an ambitious partner creating a new packaging market segment that offers a complementary consumer experience to our current rigid packaging solutions.

"ALPLA is contributing capital as well as technical know‐how to the joint venture to accelerate the development and market introduction of the paper bottle."

“ALPLA is sharing the passion for technical challenges and innovation. I want to emphasise the long‐term vision of the joint venture to introduce fully bio-based paper bottles.

BillerudKorsnäs has been engaged in the development of the paper bottle for several years with ecoXpac and Carlsberg Group.

In 2016, Carlsberg Group unveiled the first physical prototype of a paper bottle called the Green Fiber Bottle.

The formation of the JV is expected to be completed in the third quarter of this year, subject to customary regulatory approvals.

Recently, ALPLA established another JV with Swiss company FROMM called PET Recycling Team Wolfen.

This JV will focus on recycling PET from the household recyclables bin known as a yellow bag.
