Supermarket chain Asda plans to achieve its commitment to using 30% recycled content in its plastic packaging by the end of 2020.

If successful, the retailer will accomplish its goal five years ahead of the schedule. The move will help Asda to reduce approximately 19,500t of virgin plastic.

Asda CEO Roger Burnley said: “The elimination of avoidable plastic and, crucially, single-use plastic is at the top of our minds and at the top of our customers’ minds. Whilst we have already made great progress in reducing plastic in our business, we are committed to identifying new opportunities to go further and do more.

“Our focus is on removing unnecessary plastic, and where packaging is beneficial to the life of a product we will trial new solutions that are as recycled and as recyclable as possible.”

The retailer has also announced its strategy for the overall plastic reduction. According to the strategy, the company will reduce the plastic content in its own-brand packaging by 15% by early 2021.

The company will conduct trials on various refillable and reusable packaging solutions as a part of its ‘test and learn’ approach to innovation.

Asda has encouraged its suppliers to collaborate with them on the plastic pollution solution.

The retailer will also provide its suppliers with an opportunity to test packaging the innovation in a real store. The trials will last for at least three months.

Since February 2018, Asda said that it has removed over 6,500t of plastic packaging from its own brand range, which is equivalent to the weight of 600 million plastic bottles.
