British supermarket chain Asda has added more than 50 product lines to the refill zone at its flagship sustainability store in Middleton, Leeds.

The retailer has partnered with leading consumer brands, including Coca-Cola, Yorkshire Tea, Napolina, Tilda, Mars and Kellogg’s, to add the refillable products.

New products being offered include pre-filled one-litre glass Coca-Cola Original Taste and Zero Sugar bottles, as well as Mars pet food brands such as Whiskas, Chappie and Pedigree.

The expansion is part of the supermarket chain’s efforts to help customers reduce, reuse or recycle plastic packaging.

Asda commercial sustainability director Susan Thomas said: “We have always said that working in partnership with other like-minded businesses will be vital if we are to persuade people to shop more sustainably.

“We are very pleased to secure the backing of some of the UK’s most recognisable consumer brands, which means we can offer customers even more of their favourite products in refillable format.”

Initially launched last October, the refill zone received a positive response from customers, with many refillable products exceeding sales in their packaged formats.

With this expansion, the number of refillable products offered at the store comes to 76.

Last month, Asda announced it would open its refill option at four more stores, located in Rugby, Milton Keynes and York respectively, by the end of this year.

The retailer is also due to open its first refill offer in Scotland at its store in Toryglen, Glasgow, next month.

Asda aims to eliminate three billion pieces of plastic from its own-brand products and launch more than 40 refillable products by 2025.

In April, fellow UK-based grocery store chain Aldi began testing packaging-free products at its store in Ulverston, Cumbria.

Customers can carry the products in free paper bags made from material certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).
