German firm August Faller Group has designed a prototype pharmaceutical packaging that makes taking medication easier for patients.

The solution will help the company meet demands for increased digitalisation on the e-health market, as well as interactive packaging solutions.

It features flat electronics with a microcontroller in the folding carton, a battery integrated into the packaging, as well as an e-paper display.

The company has developed three prototypes, ‘Counting Device’, ‘Level Indicator’ and ‘Medical Prescription’, in a partnership with MSC Technologies from Freiburg and Pforzheim College.

“The solution will help the company meet demands for increased digitalisation on the e-health market, as well as interactive packaging solutions.”

The Level Indicator prototype calculates the amount of liquid left in a bottle with fluid medication, while the Counting Device prototype allows patients to confirm if they have taken the tablet by pressing a button on the front of the folding carton.

Patients receive a warning signal through the e-paper display in case supply of tablets decreases beyond a certain level, enabling them to order new prescription and ensure continual medication.

The Medical Prescription prototype counts tablets and reminds the patient to take them on time.

Additionally, the prototype uses an app that sends the prescription to the packaging via Bluetooth.
