BillerudKorsnäs and The Paper Straw have jointly developed the 180° bendable U-Bend straw, which is suitable for use in individual drink cartons.

Made from paper, the straw is the first of its kind that can bend at a straight-line angle. The companies have filed a patent for the product.

Under the partnership, Paper Straw will manufacture the items in Manchester in the UK, as well as in the US.

The UK manufacturer will use BillerudKorsnäs’s patented shapable paper for the durable and recyclable U-Bend straw.

BillerudKorsnäs Formable Solutions Emma Hellqvist said: “The U-Bend straw is the first paper straw that is 180° bendable. It can be used together with existing drink packaging.

“Today, many billion bendable straws are produced in a year, which means that the potential for our business and our contribution to a more sustainable packaging world is, to say the least, considerable.”

According to the Swedish paper packaging materials and solutions provider, the biodegradable straw is made from sustainably sourced forests’ materials.

The company is also planning to conduct industrial trials and is aiming to launch the straws in commercial markets by the end of this year.

Earlier this month, BillerudKorsnäs and Bosch Packaging Technology developed a sustainable paper-based packaging concept as part of their continued partnership.

In April, ALPLA partnered with BillerudKorsnäs to develop a completely sustainable paper bottle, in an initiative that saw both companies agree to form a joint venture in the Danish paper bottle company ecoXpac.
