Denmark-based brewer Carlsberg has unveiled a new packaging solution for multi-pack canned drinks to help reduce plastic waste.

Known as Snap Pack, the new technology uses glue to hold cans together, which removes the need for plastic wrapping.

Carlsberg’s new technology is expected to help remove plastic waste globally by more than 1200t per year, which is the equivalent to around 60 million plastic bags. The packaging is said to be a world first for the beer industry and it will contribute to a 76% reduction in the amount of plastic used in multi-packs.

Carlsberg Group CEO Cees ’t Hart said: “It’s an important day for Carlsberg. We are working hard to deliver on our ambitious sustainability agenda and to help tackle climate change.

“We always strive to improve and today’s launch clearly shows our ambition to follow in our founder’s footsteps towards a better tomorrow.

“Carlsberg’s Snap Pack will significantly reduce the amount of plastic waste, and we look forward to giving our consumers better beer experiences with less environmental impact.”

The company has also implemented other innovative packaging concepts to improve recyclability and sustainability, including cradle-to-cradle certified silver ink on bottle labels, a new coating on refillable glass bottles that increases lifespan, and new caps that ensure beer tastes fresher for longer periods by removing oxygen.

The measures are part of the company’s sustainability goals to ensure a zero carbon footprint and zero water waste.

Carlsberg also formed a strategic alliance with Danish environmental organisation Plastic Change to jointly work on sustainable issues and to understand the impact on both the environment and the world’s natural resources.
