Cathedral City and recycling company TerraCycle have partnered to introduce a cheese packaging recycling programme in the UK.

Under the new initiative, flexible plastic cheese pouches, individual plastic cheese wrappers and sliced cheese protective plastic film of any brand including Cathedral City will be given a second life.

The empty flexible plastic cheese packaging, which mostly ends up in landfills across the UK, will be collected through public access drop-off locations in the country.

The collected packaging is separated by polymer type, cleaned and extruded into plastic pellets or flakes.

These are then transformed it into useful plastic items such as picnic benches, plant pots or watering cans for the communities.

Cathedral City owner and Saputo Dairy UK marketing director Lee Willett said: “Without a standard recycling solution in the industry, consumers are unsure what they can recycle and where.

“The new partnership with TerraCycle aims to address this confusion, making it quick and easy for people to recycle their packaging at a local collection point.

“We’re delighted to be launching this new initiative with TerraCycle, marking an industry-first sustainable solution for everyone in the category.”

The partnership with TerraCycle is part of Cathedral City’s mission to launch 100% recyclable packaging by 2022.

Earlier this month, TerraCycle collaborated with Gillette, CVS Pharmacy and Fisher House Foundation to launch a national recycling initiative to recycle all brands of razor plastic packaging, disposable razors and replaceable-blade cartridge units.
