Colgate-Palmolive has joined TerraCycle’s Loop initiative for reusable, refillable packaging in an effort to reduce plastic waste.

Loop is a circular shopping system designed to transform the products and packaging from single-use to durable, multi-use, feature-packed designs.

More than 25 companies have joined Loop to test the new shopping system. Kroger and Walgreens have joined as retail partners for Loop in the US.

The consumer products company has also started pilot programmes in the US and France as part of the initiative. Testing will be followed by a pilot in London, UK, this year.

As part of the initiative, Colgate-Palmolive is developing durable packaging designs for Loop and plans to start testing programmes with its mouthwash products.

The company plans to expand the initiative to other Colgate oral care products and additional product categories based on results achieved from pilots in the US, France, UK, and other subsequent pilots.

“Loop offers an intriguing new option for reducing packaging waste.”

“Colgate is constantly experimenting with different approaches to conservation and waste reduction, so we’re eager to see how we can make this new model work for retailers and consumers – the keys to its success.”

In June last year, Colgate reaffirmed its commitment to reduce plastic waste by 2025 by joining the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s New Plastics Economy initiative.

The company also joined the How2Recycle Label programme in December 2017 as part of its aim to make packaging more recyclable.
