Packaging manufacturer Coveris has opened Pack Positive, a sustainable development centre in Leeds, UK, as part of its strategy to address packaging and food sustainability.

The centre will link industry stakeholders with new trends, materials and technologies, while it will draw support from an academic partnership with Leeds Beckett University’s The Retail Institute.

It is responsible for delivering sustainable packaging across multiple plastic and paper formats.

Pack Positive has a dedicated facility and creative development space that helps retailers, brand owners, manufacturers and technology partners to collaborate with Coveris through the entire packaging development process. This includes ideation and insight, through to testing, print, commercialisation and recyclability.

In line with UK Plastic Pact and Courtauld 2025 commitments to support a circular economy and cut down waste, Pack Positive enables the company to achieve its goals of delivering 100% recyclable packaging, 30% recyclate plastic content and 20% food waste reduction.

The centre provides service offering, including photography, CAD, creative design as well as Mimaki sampling capability to expedite product sampling and visualisation.

“Pack Positive Centre will be instrumental in delivering Coveris’ 2025 vision for a circular economy.”

“Through collaboration with stakeholders in the supply chain, access to expert capabilities and extensive consumer and retail insight via our partnership with The Retail Institute, the centre will facilitate education and innovation as we lead positive and ambitious change in the packaging industry.”

Coveris will host regular workshops at the Pack Positive Centre to educate and support knowledge exchange of current and future trends, legislation and development tools.

In December, Coveris launched its latest innovation for Morrisons that combines sustainable sourcing, plastics reduction and improved recyclability with a new vacuum skimboard (VSB) tray with more than 50% less plastic.

The VSB trays are intended to replace hard-to-recycle black plastic trays with a printed Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) or Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) cardboard base.
