Sustainable packaging solution provider Coveris has planned to upgrade its medical packaging production facilities with new investment.

The €10m investment is part of the company’s plan to support its customers with respect to transparency, cleanliness and quality.

Recently, the company has commenced the modernisation programme for sterile grade medical packaging at the Halle site in Germany.

It is the result of market research and planning with industry experts over two years.

Designed to attain industry 4.0 standards, the programme will cover all technology aspects in extrusion, printing, laminating and converting.

The upgrade will also involve running the production equipment in line with industry safety-and cleanliness standards.

In addition, printing and lamination will be conducted in a white room environment to minimise contamination risk.

Second phase of the modernisation programme includes the entire converting department of Halle into ISO Class 8 cleanroom conditions. It is planned to take place in the third and fourth quarter of 2020.

The shift to new equipment is expected to close in the first quarter of 2021.

Coveris CEO Jakob Mosser said: “Our high reputation in medical packaging is the result of a many decades long dedication to this market. This huge investment program is a serious commitment to support our customers to achieve the highest levels of quality and cleanliness also in the future.”

In February this year, Coveris revealed a new investment in its Kufstein plant, Austria, to expand capacity.
