British alcoholic beverage producer Diageo has expanded its nutritional labelling initiative to Irish beer brand Guinness.

The new labels on the 500ml cans will feature comprehensive nutritional information, allowing customers to check calories, carbohydrates, protein and sugar, as well as alcohol content.

The labels also include warnings on drink driving and the harmful effects of consuming alcohol.

The company noted that this initiative is a part of its commitment to provide its consumers with information to enable them to make informed choices.

Diageo Ireland Country director Oliver Loomes said: “The new Guinness labels are part of our on-going commitment to engaging with and empowering Diageo consumers so they have the tools to make positive and informed choices about what they drink.

"The new Guinness labels are part of our on-going commitment to engaging with and empowering Diageo consumers."

“While this is a global standard and will eventually feature across all brands in all markets the decision to expand to Guinness 500ml cans means that almost 40% of the Irish beer market will be covered by the new labelling standard, making Ireland a market leader in this regard.”

Besides the 500ml cans, equivalent information will also be provided for 100ml portions.

The labelling forms a part of the Diageo Consumer Information Standards (DCIS) that were introduced last year, and will be rolled out on the company's products in Ireland over the next 12 months.

Before launching the new labelling, Diageo carried out in-depth research involving more than 1,500 consumers worldwide to enhance information on the labels.
