Premium tea brand Dorset Tea has announced the launch of its fully sustainable packaging.

The move is part of the company’s mission to protect and keep coastlines and marine environment pollution free.

The company’s Sunshine Blend sustainable teabags are made using plant-based plastic called PLA. This plastic is produced from wood pulp and vegetable starch.

The biodegradable teabags can be industrially composted.

In order to ensure the packaging is 100% recyclable, the company has removed gold lettering on the outer packaging, as well as inner foil bags.

The company said that all its range will be packed in biodegradable teabags as of 13 October.

Dorset Tea brand manager Phoebe Double said: “At Dorset Tea, we love the planet as much as we love a good cup of tea, so we have been working hard to make sure our products respect the environment.

“It has been challenging, but we are very happy to announce that, as of 13 October, all of our products will be packaged in environmentally friendly packaging.

“Our special recyclable boxes are not wrapped in plastic and keep the teabags fresh without a foil bag and our biodegradable teabags can be popped into your council food waste bin after usage.”

As part of this launch, Dorset Tea has partnered with the Marine Conservation Society to promote the use of sustainable packaging and raise awareness on keeping coastlines litter free.

Marine Conservation Society corporate partnerships manager Sanjay Mitra said: “The Marine Conservation Society is delighted to be partnering with Dorset Tea’s sunshine blend and to see them removing single-use plastics from their products.

“Single-use plastics are hugely damaging for our beautiful marine environment and we applaud Dorset Tea’s efforts to minimise their impact.”
