Germany-based special papers manufacturer Drewsen Spezialpapiere has developed a new paper that could potentially replace plastic in straws.

Called PROSTRAW, the special paper is highly resistant to water and safe when in direct contact with food.

The mechanical properties of PROSTRAW Classic paper enable high-speed production processing to form a rigid and durable drinking straw.

Water repellent features of PROSTRAW Smart straw increases the shelf life and makes it suitable for industrial applications.

The new smooth paper offers an anti-fizz effect that prevents the degassing of carbonated drinks.

The innovation is a part of Drewsen Spezialpapiere’s aim to promote paper instead of plastic.

Developed in collaboration with paper straw manufacturers, the straws are recyclable and compostable.

Drewsen said: “Both varieties can be recycled via the blue bin but should any paper straws find their way into the environment, unlike plastic straws, the paper straws will disintegrate within a short period without any damage to wildlife or the environment.”

In April, the company formed a business development team Sustainable Paper Solutions to focus on barrier papers for the food industry.

The team works together with food manufacturers, packers, processors and recyclers.

In addition to the paper straws, Drewsen manufactures paper for food items.

The European Parliament approved a ban on a range of single-use plastic products such as plastic drinking straws in the member states. The law will come into force by 2021.
