Sustainable packaging company DS Smith has revealed its long-term target of lowering carbon emissions by 30% by 2030.

The commitment is in line with the reaffirmation of that target in the company’s newly launched Now and Next Sustainability Strategy.

In order to reach its goal, the company has established a partnership with energy provider World Kinect Energy Services to manage energy consumption.

The move is part of DS Smith plans to manage energy consumption in its Recycling, Paper and Packaging sites across 26 European countries.

The partnership will see the delivery of tactical solutions to DS Smith related to energy purchase and consumption, enhancing efficiencies and minimising waste in production.

Specifically, the solution will focus on the company’s 14 European paper mills.

Additionally, World Kinect Energy Services will help DS Smith in increasing energy data through price risk management services.

DS Smith energy procurement director Gerald Maunz said: “As a global business with sustainability as the foundation of our overall business strategy, being able to manage energy consumption efficiently across all our sites is fundamental.

“We were impressed with the professionalism, price risk management skills and reporting capabilities that the energy experts and portfolio management team at World Kinect Energy Services demonstrated.”

Last year, DS Smith reduced its emissions by 19% compared to 2015 on a like-for-like basis.

In March this year, DS Smith opened its first 43,000ft2 recycling facility in the US in Reading, Pennsylvania.
