German firm Gneuss has developed a new extruder in a bid to streamline tray-to-tray recycling process.

The new solution, MRSjump Extruder, will enable recycling of post-consumer thermoformed PET trays in a single extrusion step.

The solution combines the high decontamination performance of the MRS degassing extruder with a viscosity boost. Also, it does not entail pre- or post-treatment of the input material.

According to the company, the MRSjump Extruder has high degassing efficiency ensuring compliance with EFSA and FDA limits without significant upstream or downstream material treatment.

The solution also involves a simple set-up, thus helping the operator in avoiding interface problems.

The thermal and mechanical stress on the material is kept low to ensure better mechanical and optical sheet properties.

MRSjump Extrusion System can be retrofitted to an existing sheet line and can process several materials.

The operator can also deploy optional systems for measuring melt viscosity and optical properties (colour and transparency measurement) to ensure quality.

In a statement, Gneuss said: “With the innovative MRSjump Extruder, Gneuss offers an optimum solution for post-consumer tray-to-tray recycling, which meets all requirements of completely circular modern food packaging.

“Recycling and decontamination are for the first time made possible with the MRSjump Extruder, within one single extrusion step without upstream or downstream material treatment steps. This opens up new possibilities for the recycling of tray regrind.”

Founded in 1983, Gneuss focuses on delivering solutions for the plastics processing industry. According to its website, the company has more than 100 international patents.
