US-based international skincare brand Kate Somerville Skincare has partnered with the Plastic Oceans Foundation to support the cause of reducing single-use plastic pollution from the environment.

The brand, which is a part of Unilever’s prestige beauty portfolio of global brands, has pledged to use 100% recyclable packaging by 2022.

“We’re going to rethink plastic, but we’re also going to help our industry and the families around us rethink plastic.”

The decision to partner with the foundation was taken in view of its Rethink Plastic initiative, a programme that involves collaborating with brands across industries to curb plastic, reduce plastic pollution and create awareness among consumers, employees, and industry peers.

The partnership is in line with Unilever’s plan to become a greener and sustainable company.

Kate Somerville Skincare founder Kate Somerville said: “We’re going to rethink plastic, but we’re also going to help our industry and the families around us rethink plastic. A big part of that effort comes through this partnership and support of the Plastic Oceans Foundation.”

The brand’s short-term goals include removing plastic from the packaging of all kits, reducing the use of non-essential disposable plastic in the Kate Somerville Skin Health Clinic and banning plastics at its head office.

The company will also use the concept of reduce, reuse and recycle in all packaging, including alternative materials and post-consumer plastic.

Plastic Oceans Foundation global executive director Julie Andersen said: “Cosmetics and personal care products have long been a major source of single-use plastic entering our seas, waterways and land.

“Thus, we are inspired and excited by Kate Somerville Skincare taking up the mantle of leadership by implementing a concise plan to reduce their use of plastic in their packaging and elsewhere.”
