Germany-based KHS Group and Gerhard Schubert have developed a new block packaging solution for breweries and other beverage producers.

The new solution combines Schubert and KHS’s systems into a single compact, space-saving unit.

Schubert has used its patented Transmodul technology to transport erected cartons in the KHS system, as well as move bottle-filled cartons to the corresponding module for glueing and closing.

With an inline output capacity of up to 72,000 bottles, the new system can process around 30,000 bottles per hour.

Gerhard Schubert managing director Gerald Schubert said: “Bringing together a variety of different modules, our customers are provided with exactly the system that meets their specific requirements in terms of packaging design and performance capability.

“Flexibility is also reflected in the variety of possible packaging variants: the system can handle cases as well as baskets, clusters and other secondary carton packaging.”

The company is currently involved in developing modular solutions and offering packaging of various beverages, including beer, yoghurt drinks, champagne, apple wine and fruit juice.

"The system can handle cases as well as baskets, clusters and other secondary carton packaging."

KHS Group board chairman Dr Matthias Niemeyer said: “Even with production volumes of more than 100,000 hectolitres, the benefits of our customised machine concept can be fully exploited.

If required, the customer can easily expand the line at a later date.”

The companies have jointly developed a packaging block, which will be installed at Switzerland’s Schützengarten Brewery.

The multifunctional system integrates a KHS packer and a Schubert erecting and closing module, which can pack cases and cardboard boxes.

Once delivered, Schützengarten will process 11 different bottle formats using the compact packaging solution.
