UK snack producer KP Snacks and US recycling company TerraCycle have launched KP Snacks’ packaging pledge pacKPromise, a nationwide recycling scheme for bagged nuts, popcorn, crisps and pretzels packaging.

KP Snacks said pacKPromise would help the company reduce its packaging impact and achieve its long-term goal of making ‘all packaging […] recyclable, reusable or compostable by 2025.’

The scheme will use free-to-use new and established UK recycling collection points and will accept all brands of bagged nuts, popcorn, crisps and pretzels. Once collected, the packaging will be cleaned and converted into small plastic pellets and recycled into items such as outdoor furniture, storage boxes and waste bins.

The scheme offers charity points based on the number of bags collected to encourage consumers to collect and return their packaging. The points can be redeemed for charitable gifts or a payment to a non-profit organisation of the consumer’s choice.

KP Snacks estimates around 11.2 tonnes of snack packaging could be saved through the packaging pledge. The company recently invested in its Ashby facility to help bring about a 23% reduction in Hula Hoop Multipack packaging.

KP Snacks CEO Mark Thorpe said: “Plastic reduction is a significant challenge across both the manufacturing and retail environment that requires collaborative and innovative approaches.  Giving consumers access to better recycling facilities is just one solution to a complex and challenging issue.
