UK-based packaging and paper company Mondi has developed renewable paper-based packaging for Nordic food manufacturer HKScan.

The packaging for the 800g Falukorv sausages replaces their previous unrecyclable, multi-layer plastic packaging.

The solution can be disposed of in Sweden’s paper recycling streams and the paper is sourced, coated and printed domestically, reducing transportation emissions.

Mondi worked with HKScan’s research and development team and used its customer-centric EcoSolutions approach to find a sustainable and suitable barrier paper without altering its existing production lines.

The company also aimed to ensure the solution offered better print quality without compromising on product quality or protection.

Mondi Functional Paper and Films business solutions manager Jonas Fridberg said: “Our aim is always to develop fit-for-purpose packaging that is sustainable by design.

“Our work with HKScan to facilitate their switch to recyclable and renewable paper packaging for Scan Falukorv 800g is a great example of that.

“It has led to a significant reduction in carbon impact, with no change in the consumer experience, and that is truly something to be celebrated.”

The move to sustainable packaging will allow HKScan to significantly reduce its carbon emissions.

The company is committed to reaching net-zero carbon dioxide emissions by 2025 and making its food chain carbon-neutral by the end of 2040.

HKScan Sweden quality and environment director Maria Häger said: “Reducing our environmental footprint is one of our most important priorities at HKScan.

“The barrier paper from Mondi is a valuable piece of the jigsaw puzzle, enabling us to proudly announce this new, recyclable packaging for our Falukorv sausage, reducing its CO₂ impact [compared with] the previous solution by 70%.

“This represents a vital step in our sustainability journey and is helping us get closer to achieving our climate targets of achieving a carbon-neutral food chain by the end of 2040.”

In July, Unilever and Mondi jointly developed aluminium-free, recyclable paper-based packaging for Colman’s Meal Maker and Sauces range.
