India-based rigid plastic packaging company Manjushree Technopack Limited (MTL) has reportedly launched its first recycling packaging plant.

The plant is located in Bidadi Industrial Area, Bengaluru. It is said to hold capacity to process over 6,000 metric tonnes of rigid plastic post-consumer recycled (PCR) resin a year.

The company will initially leverage PCR resins to make non-food packaging and secondary food packaging.

MTL will work along with Saahas Zero Waste (SZW), a social enterprise, for gathering the plastic waste in the city which otherwise would end up in landfills.

MTL CEO Sanjay Kapote was quoted by Businessworld as saying: “Sustainability is an integral part of our business goals. Today, brands are eagerly looking for reliable solution providers who can help them with post-consumer recyclable waste material of their products.

“We are very keen to support the circular economy and strongly see the potential to become one of the few players in the industry to offer brands end-to-end solutions for recycling and Extended Producer Responsibility.

“MTL’s recycling plant in Bangalore and our collaboration with SZW is our first step towards bringing more structure to the highly unorganized collection of plastic waste.”

It is part of the company’s ‘Born Again’ initiative aimed to provide PCR materials to the fast-moving consumer good (FMCG) customers.

The company serves a number of companies such as Reckitt Benckiser, Procter & Gamble, Nestle and Coca-Cola.
