Nestlé Waters North America has entered an agreement that will enable recycled PET plastic (rPET) supplier CarbonLITE to establish a third rPET plant in Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania, US.

The plant will help expand CarbonLITE’s US operations and Nestlé Waters’ use of recycled materials in its packaging.

According to CarbonLITE, the new plant is expected to be fully operational by early 2020 and will recycle more than two billion post-consumer bottles annually.

The 200,000ft2 processing facility is also expected to save 60,000t of carbon through post-consumer materials and produce 80 million pounds of food-grade rPET pellets a year.

Nestlé Waters currently purchases rPET from CarbonLITE’s existing facilities in California and Texas.

“Being able to purchase rPET in the area helps us better support the regional economy while promoting environmental sustainability.”

Nestlé Waters North America vice-president and supply chain and procurement head Bill Trackim said: “We are pleased that CarbonLITE will be locating a facility in a region important to our manufacturing footprint.

In Lehigh Valley, Nestlé Waters’ two bottling facilities currently use recycled plastic to bottle its brands such as Nestlé Pure Life and Deer Park.

The company launched a 700ml Nestlé Pure Life bottle made of 100% rPET in February. Its single-serve bottles of Arrowhead Brand Mountain Spring Water and Nestlé Pure Life brands bottled in California contain 50% rPET.
