US-based polymer additives manufacturer Addivant has announced the roll out of a new linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) packaging solution based on its nonylphenol-free stabiliser, Weston 705.

The new packaging has been used to pack a variety of food items in stores across the US, Europe, and Asia.

Having been approved by more than 20 polymer manufacturers worldwide, Addivant’s Weston 705 liquid antioxidant allows the polyethylene producers to offer a single-additive solution to converters and packaging manufacturers.

Addivant chief technology officer Dr Jonathan Hill said: “Due to its high phosphorous content, Weston 705 reduces the use of antioxidants by up to 20%, allowing for more flexibility in formulations and recycling.

“Polyethylene resins based on Weston 705 are easier to process, more versatile, and create less plateout or gels than resins based on conventional solid phosphite antioxidant.”

The company also noted that its Weston 705 material has been approved for food-contact use in more than 50 countries worldwide.

The material also enables polyolefin, elastomer, and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) producers to anticipate changing regulations for nonylphenol and other non-intentionally added substances (NIAS).

Addivant has further secured approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and China’s National Health and Family Planning Commission (NHFPC) for Weston 705.

The company is planning to expand its Weston 705 capacity this year at its plants in Morgantown, West Virginia, US and China.
