Aluminium rolling and recycling company Novelis and premium portioned coffee provider Nespresso have partnered to launch a sustainable coffee capsule.

Nespresso’s new capsules have been produced using 80% recycled aluminium.

The new capsules contain 9.2% less aluminium material and are 8% lighter. It requires less energy to produce than virgin aluminium.

Nespresso sustainability head Jérôme Pérez said: “We are constantly challenging ourselves to improve the sustainability and circularity of our operations, including the way we source, use, and recycle material.

“Reaching 80% recycled aluminium in our capsules is a significant milestone and something we have worked hard to achieve with Novelis and other partners along the value chain.”

Novelis’ recycled, sustainable alloy helps fulfil the product specification demand of the coffee capsule market.

It is also in line with Nespresso’s continued circularity commitment by reducing waste and increasing materials’ reuse.

Additionally, it provides a strong barrier against oxygen, light and humidity.

Novelis Europe specialities vice-president Stephen Boney said: “We have a longstanding partnership with Nespresso that is focused on implementing more sustainable manufacturing processes throughout the supply chain.

“As such, we have increased the amount of recycled aluminium content in coffee capsules and developing additional end-of-life recycling solutions for greater circularity.”

A subsidiary of Indian aluminium and copper manufacturer Hindalco Industries, Novelis manufactures easily recyclable alloys and invests in technologically advanced recycling facilities.

In April, the company acquired aluminium supplier Aleris Corporation in a $2.8bn deal.
