Packaging services provider Paccor has launched newly designed environment-friendly continuous compression-moulded (CCM) bottle closures.

Over the last year, the company made an investment in Mansfield, UK, to design, test and roll out the new lightweight Stealth caps that use more than 13% less plastic material.

Following the commercial success of the innovation, it started to extend similar design principles and technology across its in-mould labelling (IML) product range.

Paccor International sales director Juergen Lehmann said: “The 13% reduction in weight of each cap will equate to approximately 600t of plastic used in the company’s production thanks to Paccor’s production capacity of three billion caps every year.

“Taking into account that Paccor has a market share of approximately 85% of the UK fresh-milk closure market, this innovative change will allow savings of millions of Euros.”

“Paccor’s Design Team have already begun conceptual work on the next generation of this market-leading closure.”

Paccor (Mansfield) UK plans to reduce plastic usage on a bigger scale without compromising the performance of its products in the supply chain.

Paccor UK managing director Ashley Jones said: “Currently, 70% of the tooling capacity has been converted to run Stealth with the project continuing until all have been converted.

“There will be further detailed scientific work commissioned once this total market conversion has been completed, however, Paccor’s Design Team have already begun conceptual work on the next generation of this market-leading closure.”

Last month, the company produced its first 250,000t of eco-friendly materials using 100% recycled PET (rPET) after investing more than £10m in its UK operations to expand production.
