The Packaging Innovations and Luxury Packaging 2019 events kicked off on Wednesday at London Olympia, featuring three session stages: The Main Stage, Pentawards Conference and Packaging News stage, with sustainability, luxury and design at the core.

On the Main Stage, attendees heard talks from The Beauty Forum, including TerraCycle business Development VP Caroline Frery and REN Clean Skincare CEO Arnaud Meysselle discussing how TerraCycle is working towards eliminating waste.

The Big Plastics Debate kicked off with a discussion hosted by On-Pack Recycling Label chair Jane Bevis and Zero Waste Scotland chief operating officer Jill Farrell on Scotland’s Deposit Return Scheme and what the rest of the UK can learn from it.

The debate moved on to cover environmentally friendly packaging and compostables, with panellists from Carlsberg, Lush Cosmetics, Foodservice Packaging Association, Green Alliance, British Plastics Federation, First Mile and University College London.

A Plastic Planet launched PlasticFreeLand with a panel, chaired by co-founder Siân Sutherland, showcasing the best plastic-free alternatives on the market.

Sutherland said: “As the creators of the Plastic Free Aisle last year, we wanted to design an entire space that champions some of the pioneering materials manufacturers in the industry. Stepping into PlasticFreeLand will feel like the future – but a future that is actually possible today.  All materials shown are viable and scalable.  It is great to work with Easyfairs again to accelerate the essential pace of plastic-free change.”

The Pentawards Conference saw talks from Microsoft, which delved into its new packaging mission and values for 2019 and focused on two aspects of its retail business: the Xbox Adaptive Controller and its Commercial Channel Redesign. The Conference also hosted a panel discussion on luxury design with representatives from Microsoft, UPM Raflatac and Fortnum & Mason.

The Packaging News stage also covered topics on the growing demand within the luxury packaging market, the importance of the ‘small pack’ and how Carlsberg is becoming more sustainable after its transition from plastic rings to snap pack.

Packaging Innovations and Luxury Packaging 2019: Day two round-up

Day two, a little shorter than day one, included The Drinks Forum, where panellists from Coca-Cola European Partners Great Britain, Hubbub UK, Garçon Wines and CanOWater discussed plastic and sustainable packaging for drinks. The Food Forum hosted talks from BOL Foods founder Paul Brown, who shared the company’s sustainable visions and Ella’s Kitchen runs making stuff great Emma Cook, who spoke on the challenges of sustainability within flexible packaging.

Bulletproof head of strategy Ed Silk took to the Packaging News stage to talk about personalisation in design and Packaging Oracle founder Haulwen Nicholas discussed how companies can help educate consumers on plastic, as opposed to spreading misinformation about the material’s sustainability.
