Organic producer and online grocer Riverford has partnered with flexible packaging provider Parkside for a home compostable packaging solution.

The partnership helped Riverford achieve its goal of transforming its fruit and vegetable packing to home compostable by the end of 2020.

Currently, the company reduces plastic usage in its food packaging by 82% when compared to mainstream supermarkets.

Furthermore, Riverford plans to make all its packaging in line with its environmental agenda.

NPD & Project manager Chloe Avery said: “As a company, we always strive to make valued and informed choices when it comes to matters concerning the environment.

“This commitment is reflected across our product range and in the packaging we use.

“We have made a packaging promise that, by December 2020, all our fruit and vegetable packaging will be home compostable.”

To enable Riverford to reach its goal, Parkside’s Park2Nature sustainable, TUV accredited compostable range of flexible packaging laminates were chosen.

Made from renewable resources such as ethically sourced plant fibres, Park2Nature reduces dependency on petrochemicals usage.

Additionally, Park2Nature complies with strict food hygiene standards and extends the shelf-life of products.

Parkside new business development manager Staci Bye said: “Riverford and the Park2Nature range fit seamlessly together. It was a pleasure to support the team in its mission to provide customers with a home compostable packaging solution.

“We are thrilled with the continued success of Park2Nature; its development has nearly been a decade in the making.”

In September, Parkside developed a high barrier compostable pack as part of the Park2Nature range of industrial and home compostable packaging solutions.
